3 teens charged with murder following boy's death

One 6-year-old boy in Florida was recently killed, and his alleged killers have been charged with murder. The murder charges were filed on a recent Wednesday. The reported killers are 18, 17 and 16 years of age.

Officials said the boy left his house to purchase candy but never came back home. Police said the boy ended up being caught in a gunfight outside of an apartment complex after obtaining $3 from his dad to purchase candy. The gunfight stemmed from a feud that heightened on Facebook.

When the three teens accused of killing the boy pulled up in a vehicle and started firing shots, another person fired back. The boy was the only one killed in the crossfire. Two of the teens have been charged as adults, while the third is currently in juvenile detention but will go to a jail for adults soon.

As a murder case goes forward through the Florida criminal justice system, a person who has been accused of murder -- alongside his or her legal counsel -- might have the chance to negotiate a plea deal in exchange for favorable considerations for sentencing. The choice of whether to accept a plea deal rests completely with the accused, who retains the right to go to trial on the merits of the case. If he or she goes to trial, the individual's charges must be proved beyond a reasonable doubt. This standard must be met before a defendant can be convicted, and it exists in an effort to keep innocent people from being found guilty of and being sentenced for crimes they did not commit.
