Former football player facing drug charges in Florida

One former football player in Florida has been accused of committing a drug crime. The man facing drug charges, Jabar Gaffney, was previously a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins as well as the University of Florida. The drug charges came following a police traffic stop.

According to police, the 35-year-old man was stopped along Interstate 75. He ended up being arrested on charges of possessing both marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The man posted a bail of $7,000 and was released on a recent Friday night.

In addition to playing for the Dolphins, Gaffney was with the New England Patriots for three seasons and the Denver Broncos for two seasons. He also played for the Washington Redskins for one season. The recent drug charges are not his first run-in with the law; he faced a charge of grand theft in the late 1990s, which led to his being kicked off his college football team.

When a person is facing drug charges in Florida, he or she has the right to go straight to trial to vigorously contest the charges. The defendant may instead choose to accept a plea deal if offered by prosecutors, which may lead to lighter charges and thus a more lenient sentence that what may be imposed following a finding of guilt at trial. The criminal defense will strive to achieve the outcome that is ultimately in the client's best interests while simultaneously ensuring that his or her rights are not violated at any stage of the criminal justice proceeding.
