2-year investigation in Daytona leads to arrests, convictions

Drug charges can dramatically affect the lives of the accused in a variety of ways. Even if someone is acquitted of serious drug charges, the impact of the allegations can reverberate for years to come. Individuals charged with drug-related offenses should learn all they can about minimizing the negative consequences.

Daytona Beach police, working with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, have arrested 29 people in connection with an almost two-year investigation. Many of those arrested have been accused of drug- and gun-related offenses. In addition to weapons, authorities have reportedly seized cocaine, marijuana and prescription drugs valued at several thousand dollars. According to reports, the investigation initially focused on a group called the 819 Boys.

Of the 29 defendants, 22 have already been found guilty in federal court. The remaining defendants’ cases will be heard in the circuit court. According to police, 12 of the individuals have prior criminal convictions.

If you are facing charges and have a prior conviction on your record, then it is extremely important to have a strong criminal defense. Because of a prior conviction, a judge may be required to hand down a stiff mandatory sentence if you are convicted again, and a defense attorney can explain your options for achieving the best possible outcome.

In any case, the prosecution carries the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Such proof requires an evidentiary link between the accused and the alleged crime. If no such link is provable, then the charge should be dropped.
