Man pleads guilty to felony DUI in Florida

A Florida man has been accused of causing the deaths of two people after drinking and driving. The fatal felony DUI accident occurred in Sept. 2015 Seneca County. The man recently pleaded guilty to criminal charges, acknowledging an addiction to alcohol.

He admitted he was intoxicated when he breached the center line of the road while navigating a curve. As a result, his vehicle struck a motorcycle. The motorcycle operator, who was 49, and his girlfriend, who was 47, both died at the accident scene. The now-convicted man reportedly attempted to flee the crash scene, but police caught him before he could run away.

He pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide (two counts), which is a class B felony. He also pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the second degree, a class C felony. In addition, he pleaded guilty to DWI, a felony. The man has been scheduled for sentencing in late March. He is expected to spend 15 years to life behind prison bars.

When a person is accused of felony DUI, he or she has the right to go to trial if the person believes this is in his or her best interests. Instead of going to trial, the individual may accept a plea agreement, if offered by prosecutors. This typically offers the possibility of reduced criminal charges and/or a more lenient sentence from the court. Defense counsel will pursue the outcome that is in the defendant's best interests while simultaneously fighting to preserve all of the defendant's legal rights in the Florida criminal justice system.
