New criminal charges for troubled actor

Many Florida readers will remember media coverage of prior arrests of actor Nicholas Brendon, who played roles in "Criminal Minds" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Brendon has been plagued with addiction issues, and he has run afoul of the law on multiple occasions. In these most recent criminal charges, Brendon is accused of far more serious crimes than in previous incidents.

Police were called to a Saratoga Springs hotel on reports of a domestic violence matter. When they arrived, a woman who has been dating Brendon told them that she came to the hotel to return items of his property after the couple broke up. She stated that when she tried to leave the hotel, Brendon grabbed her keys and threw her cell phone into the roadway. There were also allegations of physical violence, including a choking attempt.

By the time police arrived, Brendon had left the scene. He was picked up a short distance away from the hotel and arrested for obstruction of breathing, robbery and criminal mischief. He was released on a $20,000 bond.

As these criminal charges make their way through the Florida legal system, Brendon can expect that his multiple prior arrests may come into play. If the evidence suggests that a conviction is likely, it is possible that his defense attorneys could negotiate a plea agreement that could include a voluntary stint in a rehab facility. That outcome would allow Brendon to avoid a trial, and it might also get him the help that he appears to need.
