Florida woman faces drunk driving charges after fatal accident

The issue of driving under the influence of alcohol is one that receives a significant amount of attention today. Even alcohol companies have created commercials expounding on the importance of drinking responsibly. Possibly as a result of the attention brought to the subject, many people may now be more likely to assume that an accident that happened at night under questionable circumstances is the result of drunk driving. However, a person's guilt must be proved beyond a reasonable doubt -- a burden of proof difficult to meet on the basis of assumptions alone. One Florida woman now faces criminal charges as a result of a fatal accident believed to have happened while she was under the influence of alcohol.

Police claim that the woman was traveling on a Florida interstate with three small children at approximately 4:30 a.m. one morning in January. The van she was driving allegedly struck a sport utility vehicle, although the cause of the collision is unclear. The SUV exited the road before flipping onto its roof.

The driver of the SUV, a 69-year-old man, passed away, while his 69-year-old female passenger suffered serious injuries. The young children in the van were treated for minor injuries. The driver of the van now faces several criminal charges as a result of the accident, including DUI manslaughter.

The drunk driving charges that the woman faces are serious and could have a significant impact on both her life and the life of her family. For those facing such charges in Florida, an experienced attorney can review their cases and help them determine the best courses of action. For some cases, this could include fighting the charges in court, while in others the best option could be negotiating plea deals.
