Daytona Beach man charged with felony DUI after fatal crash

Serious auto accidents involving allegations of drunk driving can be devastating for everyone involved. No one wakes up and expects to be involved in a deadly accident, but unfortunately fatal crashes are a reality, and drivers can face serious criminal charges if police believe alcohol was involved.

Recently, a Daytona Beach man surrendered to authorities after Florida law enforcement officials issued a warrant for his arrest. He is now charged with multiple felony DUI counts, including DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. The charges come after a tragic car accident in October 2013.

According to police, the 32-year-old was speeding in a rented vehicle when he ran a red light and collided with an SUV. The occupants of the SUV were a husband and wife, ages 70 and 58, respectively, and the couple died at the scene.

The accused driver and his two passengers were also injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment. While the driver was in the hospital, police reportedly obtained a warrant to test his blood for alcohol. The test indicated that his blood-alcohol content was 0.115 percent, which is over the legal limit of 0.08 for drivers.

The penalties for a DUI manslaughter conviction in Florida are long-lasting. A driver can be sentenced to as many as 15 years in prison and face fines of up to $10,000. Additionally, a conviction on this very serious charge can result in the defendant’s loss of a driver’s license for the rest of his or her life.

Anyone accused of felony DUI would be wise to explore the available options for mounting a strong legal defense.
