Study: 40 to 50 percent of American males are arrested by age 23

A recent peer-reviewed study in the journal “Crime & Delinquency” revealed a shocking truth: nearly 40 percent of white men and 50 percent of African-American men in the U.S. have been arrested at least once by the time they reach age 23. Moreover, 20 percent of African-Americans women, 18 percent of white women and 16 percent of Latinas had been arrested by that age. The racial disparity deserves serious attention, but the sheer number of arrests itself is staggering.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement recently announced the arrest of an apparently prepossessing married couple, ages 46 and 44, respectively. While legislative leaders as well as the governor have staunchly opposed decriminalizing the herbal drug for medical use, a number of ill Floridians leave the state to receive the treatment where it is legal. Some of those who do not have the means to leave the state find ways to obtain medical marijuana in Florida, risking criminal prosecution.

Will Colorado's experience affect how Florida treats DUI-drugs?

Around 25 states have legalized marijuana for medical or recreational use or decriminalized its use in small amounts, according to the marijuana legalization group NORML. Florida is not among them, but we still have to find a way to deal rationally with its consequences, including what to do when people drive under its influence.
